Pros: I remember the first time I was introduced to “Fruit Ninja.” A friend of mine (he’s a programmer by trade), pulled me aside to show off the game that had been eating away at all of his precious free time. He was so excited to show off his fruit slashing skills that he literally jumped up and down and pointed when he completed a 5 fruit combo in one move.

Although I never reached my friend’s level of giddy excitement over “Fruit Ninja,” I must admit, it’s a pretty good game. You slash fruit in mid air, while avoiding bombs. Each hit slices the fruit in half and splashes a temporary juice stain on the wooden background. The game ends if a bomb was hit, three fruit were missed, or once the timer runs out (only in certain modes).

Arcade mode is arguably the best, because of the extra special fruit that cause everything to slow down, create a frenzy of fruit to fly in front of you, or double the points of every move you make. Also bombs just take away from the timer, and don’t end the game outright.

There are copy cats to this popular game (see “Veggie Samurai”), but “Fruit Ninja” deserves the respect for its original and enjoyably ridiculous concept.

Cons: First off, “Zenonia 3” is essentially a Zelda rip off in look and feel. For example, observe the pots and treasure chests in the world, then look me in the eye and tell me they aren’t taken directly from the asset list of any number of 2D Zelda games. The playable main character even has conspicuously spiky blond hair and is followed by a hovering fairy in a red dress (except this one has extremely large breasts). The overt similarities to Zelda reminded me of the cookie cutter “mock chicken legs” served at public school lunch time – close, but is it even meat?

The story is cliché. You play as an orphan, trying to find his way, and bla, bla, bla, good against evil, bla, bla, bla, so much text, bla, bla bla. Your caretaker is from the previous Zenonia games, and has the not-so-subtle name of “Regret.” Gee, I wonder what HIS motivation is. I don’t care; just get to the action. But the action is no better. Its awkward game play, especially the jerky D-pad movement and repetitive button mashing for attacks.

The art is annoying. I’m all for pixel art, but here it’s just not interesting. In addition to the art being a “mock chicken leg” rip off of Zelda, the animations are just plain lazy. Nearly all idol animations are the standard up and down movement, like the character is “mousercising” in place instead of simply breathing like a normal person.

No, “Zenonia 3,” you did not win over this Zelda dame, but thanks for trying.

As TD games go, Star Defense Mission 2 is actually not bad. The graphics are decent, and the devs even bothered to put in a story! Bravo! Gameplay was smooth, and controls were solid. The game was put together well and has no glaring issues, but overall SDM2 really just comes up as an "eh, it's all right" type of game. The game will definitely satisfy your craving for TD, but it's really not all that different from your average TD game in the App Store.

There's not that much variation in SDM2, either. You've got 3 types of towers that don't really upgrade that significantly. Your upgrades are actually quite unnoticeable, at least visually. And the maps... they all pretty much look and feel the same. Where's the excitement in that?

Pros: Legend of Master 2 is an RPG with a more action based combat (think Zelda). There are different classes, weapons, etc. and it is pretty much a basic roleplaying game. That being said, it is rare to find a role-playing game on the App store that doesn't completely suck.

The graphics and animations were surprisingly good. They kept the old semi-top down view, but really added some nice touches. Everything moved smoothly, and looked good.

Also, the controls were pretty good. Easily laid out, easy to use, and not terribly complicated.

There is a story, and while its not the most complicated of stories, nor the most original, and you have to wade through Google translate grammar, its better than most on the app store.

In fact, that just about sums up the game perfectly. By console standards, its not very good, but compared to most other japanese RPGs on the app store, its pretty good.

The game is very easy. I have yet to even come close to dying, and even on the few occasions where I was to half my health, I had an abundance of health potions. I wish the game was much harder.

There are several little things I wont go into, but they all add up to keep the game in the "ok" range. Just minor tweaking and refining would make this game infinitely better.

Pros: Really cute game. Love the music and the art. It's fun to play and isn't hard to learn. My four year old is addicted... and so am I when I can get my phone back.

In Kingball, you are a molten-ish ball that rolls around and solves puzzles. The rolling is controlled by the accelerometer.

The controls worked out much better than I was expecting. Normally, with the tilt-to-roll-the-ball controls, you get a weird, glitchy and inaccurate mess. Not so with Kingball. The controls were quite accurate and smooth, and every time I messed up, it was because I messed up, not the game.

The levels were also very well designed. The there was a good range of difficulty, and I could tell that there had been a lot of thought put into it.

Cons: There is only one thing that made me not like the game.

The camera.

Just... wow. I literally got a headache after playing it for 5 minutes. After playing it over the course of several days I managed to build my endurance to 6 minutes.
To accomodate from its behind-the-ball camera, there is a directional pad in the bottom right corner that you can use to move the camera. This would be nice except the change is instant, disorienting, and doesn't always work.

This wouldn't be an issue, except that it is a crucial part of the game. You literally cannot beat the game without using it.
That one thing was what kept me from liking the game, and kept me from playing it for any length of time. Until they fix that, it's just unplayable for me.

The controls are good in concept, but have too many issues to make them work. The shooting button doesn't work at times, the switching and reloading take forever, the rocket launcher doesn't shoot for an eternity after you pull the trigger, etc.

The biggest issue was the accuracy of the guns. I understand a bit of realism is good, especially with military themed games. I also understand that shooting things from a helicopter is far from a precise art. But, this is still a game, and you need to sacrifice a little realism for good gameplay. I literally wasted a clip shooting directly at an ammo box before I hit it...

All in all, the game had potential, but it needs a lot more refinement to make it good.

Your character runs across the map as you jump from platform to platform while using your right hand to swipe the screen and kill enemies. Sounds simple? It is, but it works great and has endless hours of enjoyment while offering enough challenge to keep you coming back. The game sprinkles in different enemies, power-ups (such as jumping 3x in the air or a stronger blade), and a changing background. This adds enough variety to keep you playing as you try to make it deeper into the game. The game gets more difficult the further you progress, but saves you the frustration of starting over by saving at key checkpoints.
