Pros: From start to finish, Plants vs. Zombies is an extremely enjoyable game. Take it from someone who plays mostly FPS: it doesn't matter who you are or what kind of genre you normally play—you will like (and probably love) Plants vs. Zombies. The premise of the game is simple: using a variety of plants, you fight off wave after wave of zombies who, of course, want to eat your brains. In other words, this is really your basic tower defense formula, except with plants and zombies. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that the fun of Plants vs. Zombies lies in mixing around your plants to come up with the most effective strategy for brutally mowing down the zombies. Not that the game makes this easy—levels become increasingly difficult as you progress, testing not only the fortitude of your plants, but also your wits. And though there are 50 levels in all, Plants vs. Zombies is anything but boring; indeed, the game is actually divided into five stages, each with unique challenges and zombies for you to face.
Another impressive—and often rather amusing—aspect of Plants vs. Zombies is the extent to which everything sticks to the themes of 'plants' and 'zombies'. The many cleverly named plants are a perfect example of this. For example, there are the Sunflowers, which fuel your army of plants with sunlight (duh); the Wallnuts, which are best used as a wall between your plants and the zombies; and the Squashes, which, well...squash the first enemy they see. The occasional mail you receive from the Zombies is also rather funny and adds to the charm of the game; but more importantly, it offers a valuable lesson: Zombies can't spell. Ultimately, what was hardest for me to believe is that even beyond the 50 levels of its adventure mode, Plants vs. Zombies has a ton of content worth going through (survival mode and the many mini-games are especially fun). And to top it all off, Plants vs. Zombies boasts upbeat, enjoyable music that appropriately captures the lighthearted, rather comical mood of the game. All in all, Plants vs. Zombies is a superb game that I would recommend to anyone. Who says plants and zombies don't go together?
Cons: I really don't have anything negative to say about Plants vs. Zombies. A few minigames aren't as enjoyable as the rest of the game's content, but this reflects less on them and more on the strength of the rest of the game. One thing worth noting (and this is not a criticism per se) is that Plants vs. Zombies is probably a game that will flow more smoothly on a computer than on a console—as is the case with most RTS games. I played Plants vs. Zombies for the Xbox and unfortunately, things were initially complicated because my controller is old and the joysticks are half-broken. When I switched to a newer controller, I had no problems, but as anyone who has played both computer and console games knows, controlling things is usually much easier with a mouse.
