Pros: Now this was a game! It's just serious enough to draw you in but it's crazy plot leaves it squarely in campy video game land. Hideo Kojima finally made a Metal Gear game exactly the way I'd dreamed when I was a kid playing the original on the NES. The game play and controls are excellent and the sneaking is as good as ever. I loved how you can play though it anyway you like. As is Metal Gear tradition you can complete it without killing anyone (quite a feat) or you can slaughter every poor soul you came up against with a huge arsenal of fully customizable and beautifully rendered weapons. Also, Old Snake is just too cool. In fact, I'm pretty sure that this was the best Snake ever... grizzled, tired of life and on his last legs still trying to save the shitty world, even with an achy back and arthritis. I know the series has been going on forever and Hideo said this would be his last shot at Metal Gear... but deep down I'm still hoping Snake's got just one last mission left in him.
Cons: The story is ludicrous! Having not played the third game I was thoroughly lost with all the plot references being tossed around. The cut scenes, while beautiful and well directed were just too much... they could have cut half the exposition and made a much more understandable and interesting story. Someone has got to reign Hideo in on this, his love for cut scenes and useless exposition is bordering on obsession these days!
