Pros: “Spell Sword” is a series of levels, in which the player collects magic spell cards to combine with their sword, while fighting a barrage of enemies of animal / insect / other origin (the coolest being a giant eyeball hanging from a tree by its own tendon – so dark, so cool).
However, the coolness of “Spell Sword” stops at the evil eyeball, which legitimately might be enough for others. Also, I must admit that the controls are quick on the response time, and I appreciate a high jump mechanic.
Still, I was looking for a more special experience – (A) magic cards + (B) a sword + (C) pixilated platforms = (D) a washed-up game premise. If just one of those three norms had been changed to something random, like a banana, I would have been on board, but instead, I was just bored.
Cons: Everything is only Ok in “Spell Sword.” The graphics are fine, the tutorials / hints make sense, and the music is tolerable. Game play is move-jump-attack, just like it always is. Again, the only point of special interest was the enemies, so why do I have to destroy the only cool part of the game?
Also, I’m just going to admit it – when I saw the title “Spell Sword,” I initially thought this was an educational spelling game, and I was actually disappointed when the intended use of “spell” popped into my head. “Oh, ‘SPELL’ Sword. Oh.” I was then later disappointed again, when I didn’t find any typos in the text, because a game titled “Spell Sword” with incorrect spelling throughout would have been amusingly ironic.
