Pros: I came up with a lot of brief, one word descriptions of Super Meat Boy as I was shouting at the t.v. while playing it, but I don't think it would be appropriate to repeat them in this review. So first things first: Super Meat Boy is easily one of the hardest games ever released. This retro-styled 2D-platformer, has no forgiveness, no check-points and no health bar. Any contact with a circular saw, broken glass, or any of the other numerous death inducing objects results in pixelated blood spatter and Super Meat Boy spawning at the beginning of the level. Luckily, almost every level can be beaten in under 20 seconds and Meat Boy respawns almost immediately. That is a good thing, because dying dozens (if not hundreds) of times on any given level is not rare. Precision and timing are everything, and, in the harder levels, nothing short of the muscle memory gained through repetition will lead you to victory. The challenge is rarely unwelcome, however, due to the aforementioned quick respawn times and brilliant, varied level design. Super Meat Boy also contains myriad secret levels, warp-zones fashioned after various retro games, and collectible Band-aids, which can be used to unlock a several alternate characters, including cameo characters from various other indie games. Overall these unlockables add quite a bit of replay value to an already lengthy game. The story, in the tradition of platformers, is decidedly simple, but adds its own quirky sense of humor to plot, and a wonderful soundtrack is just the cherry on top of an already wonderful presentation.
Cons: Some (if not most) gamers will find Super Meat Boy unnecessarily hard. I would be very impressed by the person who could get through this game without breaking down into either violent yelling or crying at least once, but for those itching for a good old-fashioned challenge, I can recommend no game more strongly than Super Meat Boy
