Pros: Sonic was one of the great 2D side scrollers, and it really gave Nintendo and Mario a run for their money. I remember I never actually owned this game (Nintendo fan for life), but my piano teacher (haha) let me borrow her Genesis for a few months and this was pretty much the only game she had. The game was just plain fun to play -- you run around (FAST) on this island, collecting rings and beating up Dr. Robotnik. What Sonic had on Mario was definitely speed -- rolling around those loops just made the game super exciting. It felt more fast-paced than any Super Mario game, which was pretty awesome at the time.

Pros: It's a classic. What else? Mario is to Nintendo as what Sonic is to Sega. And while both of them have different themes respectively, they both carry the same mission and style. Sonic in his 2D side-scrolling, pixilated universe is king, and his version of the golden coins are the golden rings. The enemies are more creative, the music is hum-worthy and incredibly catchy, and the ability to loop-de-loop through a bunch of different obstacles at top speed make this game in a class all its own. And Dr. Robotnik - "Eggman" - is fun to look at, and even more fun to defeat.
